Lesson Plan 7 – February 11, 2026

Lessons From The Book Of Ecclesiastes.

Ecclesiastes 7.

Welcome to Small Group Lesson Plan #7, continuing with studies in the book of Ecclesiastes. I hope you’re finding it beneficial so far and that you are reading and meditating in scriptures for yourself.

In Chapter 6, from the last small-group time, we found Solomon continuing to shed light on the realities of having great wealth through his personal observations. He calls having wealth given by God and not having the power to enjoy it an evil thing. He goes further to imply that it would be better not to have been born than to live a life without satisfaction from the goodness of life.

There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men: A man to whom God has given riches and wealth and honor, so that he lacks nothing for himself of all he desires; yet God does not give him power to eat of it, but a foreigner consumes it. This is vanity, and it is an evil affliction.

Ecclesiastes 6:1-2 NKJV

In Chapter 7, King Solomon discusses many subjects. He starts with the value of a good name, the value of mourning and sorrow, and then he meanders to things like comparing the rebuke of the wise to the song of fools. He also talks about patience in seeing a matter to its end, cautions against acting in anger, and declares that “anger rests in the bosom of fools.” The entire chapter, in distinct short sections (the exception being vs 11-26 with 15 verses), covers the following 8 subjects: A Good name, vs. 1; Mourning, vs. 2-4, The Rebuke of the wise vs. 5-6, Oppression and bribes vs. 7, Patience vs. 8, The foolishness of retained Anger vs. 9-10, and Wisdom for life vs. 11- 26, Human limitation vs. 27-29.

Solomon had a lot to say about practical wisdom in vs 11-26. Let’s see vs 12 as a highlight:

For wisdom is a defense as money is a defense,
But the excellence of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to those who have it.

Ecclesiastes 7:12 NKJV

Scripture Study Guideline

Today’s Bible Reading: Ecclesiastes Chapter 7:1-29. Please read and discuss your findings.

What stood out to you? What do you think the Holy Spirit is speaking to you? Did any verse or set of verses jump out to you? Please discuss your thoughts.

  • What does a good name look like? Read Proverbs 22:1, Proverbs 10:7, Proverbs 22:29.
  • Focus on Ecclesiastes 7:11-27. What are some key points about wisdom as an essential gift from God to live a successful life as followers of Jesus
  • Describe what vs 29 confirms about human behaviour

Conclusion

Steven K. Scott, a successful Christian author and businessman who authored the bestseller “The Richest Man Who Ever Lived,” credits his rise to success to the book of Proverbs (another book mostly written by Solomon). Stephen flunked his first 9 jobs after college and was headed for failure until he read the entire book of Proverbs and gained 16 ideas he applied to his life, transforming him into the juggernaut he is today. From maintaining a good name and living right with heaven in mind, thinking of things above and not of things on the earth, as Paul instructs in Colossians, our way and manner of life can be examined by how we respond to these truths. Do we agree with Solomon about mourning? Do we agree with the wise King about being patient in Spirit? Will we consider the work of God and praise Him?
