The Church: What is it?

The Church (the body of Christ on earth) is God’s idea. Ephesians 4:11-16

Introduction

Paul writes that our citizenship is in Heaven (Philippians 3:20). This means that every Christian has dual citizenship. So even though we live on earth we must recognize that we have some peculiarities that should mark us as citizens of a different land (Heaven). We know people and where they come from usually by their cultural disposition. See 1 Peter 2:9

Structure, Gathering and Purpose

Jesus gave 5 gifts for the structure and equipping of the church. They are Apostle, Prophet, Pastor, Teacher and Evangelist. The apostles and prophets are given special wisdom for building the church. According to Ephesians 4:11-16, as we gather weekly to worship God, we: (See Acts 20:7)

  1. Are NURTURED for personal spiritual growth for every member.
  2. LEARN and PRACTICE heaven CITIZENRY. Are we Canadian Christians or Christian Canadians? What do you think we should be?
  3. EXPERIENCE God’s presence and power at work on earth. We must not starve The Father of corporate worship. See John 4:24
  4. Prepared for doing GOOD WORKS which God foreordained. Ephesians 2:10

A Culture of Growth (Jesus Culture)

Growth begins and is sustained first by our WORDS. We must speak what we believe. God set the example for us in Genesis 1:1-3. He spoke light into a void and dark situation. Please read and discuss Psalm 35:27. What are we speaking? What are you speaking? Jesus isn’t called The Word by accident!

Conclusion

God designed and is building His church (the body of Christ) for His glory. As members of His family we all have a part to play. Are you playing your part?
