Higher Ground: Solutions to Intractable Problems
Read Matthew 17:14-21
Introduction
In our passage, we read about the man who had a child with a spirit that always put the child in harm’s way (see vs 15-16). Jesus concluded by saying that problems, such as this one in the passage, can only be resolved by adding fasting to prayer. “However this type does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” vs 21. Spiritual problems require spiritual tools such as fasting with prayer.
Higher Ground for Solutions
One reason for spiritual encounters and experiences, however the Lord may choose to grant us, is to empower us for effective service. What other reasons do you think spiritual encounters are for?
Discussion: Fasting as a Power Broker
Personal or corporate fasting with prayer (abstinence from food) from time to time is a powerful spiritual practice and can be done for half a day, one day or a number of days. Jesus only began His earthly ministry after a 40 day fast. See Matthew 4:1-11. No wonder there was much power in His ministry.

Newbies are encouraged to try half a day skipping breakfast and breaking the fast at about noon after a session of scripture reading and prayer.

Conclusion
One of satan’s lies is to sell the idea that he does not exist. The truth is that satan is a wicked being who seeks to steal, kill and destroy. Thankfully, God, through Christ, has provided for us to overcome his wiles.
